Karnataka’s unique Philately Passport has recently piqued growing interest among stamp collectors, travel enthusiasts, and heritage lovers, which further compelled the Karnataka Postal Circle to announce the sale of 8,000 copies on October 10 and 11. Priced at ₹600 each, the special booklet combines stamp collecting with travel, which permits people to document visits to Karnataka’s historical, cultural and tourist destinations through distinctive postal cancellations.
The sale is being organised during National Postal Week, which runs from October 9 to 15 and will be available at Bengaluru General Post Office (GPO), Mysuru, Mangaluru and Belagavi. Sales will take place on a first-come, first-served basis, with physical tokens granted to visitors. There will be no online sales or advance bookings.
What Is a Philately Passport?
Despite its name, the Philately Passport is not an official passport and cannot be used for international travel or immigration. It is a specially designed collector’s booklet unveiled by India Post’s Karnataka Postal Circle to bolster philately — the gathering and study of postage stamps and related postal materials.
The booklet encompasses around 100 permanent pictorial cancellations showcasing Karnataka’s heritage, landmarks, temples, wildlife destinations and other places of cultural importance. Collectors can visit designated post offices, obtain the relevant postage stamps and have them marked with location-specific pictorial cancellations.
Each cancellation serves as a tangible record of a destination, thus converting the booklet into a personalised travel diary and souvenir.
Why Has Karnataka’s Philately Passport Become Popular?
The Philately Passport has gained attention because it combines travel experiences with a traditional hobby in an increasingly digital world. Rather than collecting ordinary souvenirs, owners can visit different locations and forge a collection of distinctive postal marks linked with their experience.
The move also motivates people to explore Karnataka beyond its attractive tourist attractions. Students and families can use it to learn about local history, geography and cultural heritage, while experienced philatelists can add a themed collection to their present albums.
The limited availability of the booklet has contributed to the demand. Earlier releases reportedly attracted long queues at Bengaluru GPO, with travellers arriving early to secure copies.

The initiative reflects India Post’s broader effort to promote philately and make postal heritage meaningful and lucrative to youth, and churns out a a innovative way to discover the state’s history and culture.
