World AIDS Day 2023: World AIDS Day is observed annually on 1 December. The day is recognized to create awareness among people about HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), its transmission, diagnostic testing, preventive measures, and treatment options. WHO commemorates this day to provide essential prevention, testing and treatment support services, build trust, generate innovative solutions, promote health, monitor the implementation of policies and programmes, and hold providers accountable. The theme for World AIDS Day 2023 is “Let communities lead”.

In honour of the many lives lost to AIDS, the WHO Regional Office for Africa will be at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe on World AIDS Day 2023, alongside Winnie Byanyima, UNAIDS Executive Director, and leaders of the HIV response in Zimbabwe.

World AIDS Day 2023: Important Facts
- The first-ever global health day was established in 1988 and is known as World AIDS Day.
- As of the end of 2018, the World Health Organisation estimated that 37.9 million individuals were living with HIV. Out of them, only 79% underwent testing, 62% got treatment, and 53% managed to suppress HIV with a lower risk of spreading the infection.
- One of the World Health Organization's (WHO) eleven recognised worldwide public health initiatives is World AIDS Day.
- Between 27.2 million and 47.8 million people have died from AIDS globally, and as of 2020, there are projected to be 37.7 million HIV-positive individuals.
- The focus of World AIDS Day in its first two years was on youth and children.
- On World AIDS Day, Popes have sent out greetings to medical professionals and sufferers every year since 1988.
