What Are College Credit Points?

College credit points in simple words are ‘academic currency’ students acquire during their higher education in and outside India. It tracks all your educational experience, achievements in forms of degree, certificate, online course, and practical experience. Instead of sticking to traditional formats of tracking your subject marks, universities can offer credit value to each course.

For example, if you are an engineering student your weekly lectures, and lab sessions will be counted for credit points. Whereas, attending seminars, and training sessions will add 1-2 credit points into your academic record for the semester. Credit points are allotted to different courses, based on the National Credit Framework. Students can learn about what it is and how to avail it from here.

National Credit Framework

The National Credit Framework, as introduced on October 19, 2022, by the Union Ministry of Education, officially integrates your academic experience, education and practical skills into a unified credit point. Credits earned across your school and higher institutions are stored in Academic Bank Credit (ABC). It is based on the digilocker system, and works like a bank account but for your academic experience and achievements.

  • One credit equals 30 hours of learning (including lectures, lab work, assignments, and self-study).

  • 1 academic year equals 1,200 hours of learning.

  • Total Credits each Year = 40 (for a full-time student).

Ways Students Can Benefit from the NCrF

Here are top ways students enrolled in university/colleges can benefit from the NCrF (National Credit Framework)

1. With NCrF students can access flexibility in their academic pursuit. You can pause your studies in the middle, to acquire certificate or diploma based courses, or to take a break. Students can easily restart their degree later instead of starting the degree again as your academic years have already been tracked.

2. You don’t have to carry physical documents of each of your academic records. Your earned credit points are already saved in your digital bank, making it easier to migrate to different institutions or universities based on your academic record.

3. It offers you multidisciplinary options to pursue multiple disciplines without any academic barriers. ABC credits allow you to pursue degree, certificate or diploma programs that match your job requirements and help you upscale your career.
