The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has made a remarkable move in acknowledging and fostering athletic talent by admitting five exceptional athletes with significant national achievements for the academic year 2024-25. These athletes have been selected under IIT Madras’ 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) category, a program designed to provide top-tier athletes with opportunities to pursue higher education while continuing their athletic pursuits. This initiative not only highlights the institute’s commitment to supporting sports excellence but also underscores its dedication to nurturing talent across various domains, ensuring a balanced and holistic approach to education. Through the SEA category, IIT Madras aims to provide a platform where students can excel in both academics and athletics, fostering a culture of excellence and achievement.

The institute reserves two extra seats in each undergraduate program for athletes, with one seat specifically designated for female students. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and support athletic talent. The allocation ensures equal opportunities for both male and female athletes. It highlights the institution's commitment to fostering diversity in its student body.
- Arohi Bhave (volleyball, Maharashtra) is pursuing BS (Medical Sciences and Engineering)
- Aryaman Mandal (water polo, swimming, West Bengal) is enrolled in BTech (Computer Science Engineering) at IIT Madras
- Nandini Jain (squash, Delhi)
- Prabhav Gupta (table tennis, Delhi)
- Vangala Vedavachan Reddy (lawn tennis, Andhra Pradesh) are all pursuing BTech in AI and Data Science
We received numerous applications," Professor Mahesh Panchagnula, head of CESSA at IIT Madras, stated. "However, we ultimately selected five exceptional students who not only excel in sports but also meet the rigorous academic standards of IIT Madras. They have successfully cleared JEE (Advanced), ensuring that we uphold our commitment to academic excellence while simultaneously recognising and rewarding outstanding athletic achievement.
