In 1968, with assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Indian government established the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology, formerly the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology. 

Before this institute, there was no other institute imparting knowledge; the main aim of the institute was to train personnel in various fields of plastics engineering and technology. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) was the executing organisation.

List of Institute Of Petrochemicals Technology (IPT)

The Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology is governed by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, which is part of the Indian government. This institute and its campuses focus on all areas of plastics, including design, tooling and mould manufacturingproduction engineering, testing, and quality assurance etc.  CIPET meets the needs of the polymer and associated industries from a variety of locations around the country.

There are around 9 Institutes of Petrochemical Technology across India. CIPET has around 40 campuses in 22 states.  Below is the list of the campuses of the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology:-

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses Offered by CIPET

Polymer science and plastic technology have been the primary areas of study for the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology since its founding fifty years ago. All the Institutes of Petrochemicals Technology (IPT) centres provide undergraduate and graduate engineering and technology programs.

The IPTs are housed within the individual State Universities, which are associated with the Degree Courses. Below is the list of all the courses that are offered by these institutes:-
