The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) has revolutionised undergraduate admissions in central universities by instituting a standardised, score-based selection process. Despite a single nationwide examination, admission outcomes differ greatly among universities, courses, and categories.  As a result, many students often seek clarification on one very important question, i.e.,

‘What is a safe CUET UG score for top Central Universities?’

A safe score is not determined by a single number; it is influenced by various factors, which are as follows:-

  • Seat availability

  • Topic combinations

  • Normalisation methods

  • Competition level

  • Admission policy specific to the university

What is a Safe Score for Top Central Universities Through CUET UG 2026?

A score range that typically places a candidate well beyond the minimum eligibility criteria and within the competitive merit pool for a particular course and university is referred to as a ‘safe score’ in the CUET UG framework. The safe score shows a high likelihood of being shortlisted during the counselling or merit list rounds, but it does not guarantee admission.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has established a percentile-based statistical method for normalising CUET UG Scores. This means that rank and admission to preferred central universities are not solely determined by raw scores. Instead, a student’s score represents how well they performed in comparison to other students who took the same courses during various shifts.

Furthermore, students should be aware that there is no single cut-off that central universities adhere to.

Based on the CUET scores, eligibility criteria, seat intake authorised by statutory bodies, and the reservation process, each university creates its specific cutoff and merit lists. As a result, a safescore should be interpreted according to the course and university rather than as a general standard.

For the top central universities (such as BHU, JNU, and DU), a safe score through CUET UG is typically thought to be in the 90th-99th percentile, which corresponds to a score of 700-850+ out of 1000 or sometimes 600-750+ out of 1000, depending on subjects, especially demanding and competitive courses.

The following is a summary of some of the cutoff scores of the top central institutions of CUET UG 2025, which will assist students in comprehending the competition they participate in for the academic year 2026-27.
