Every year, several lakh engineering aspirants qualify for JEE Main and look toward admission into the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). But there is one most common question after the results are declared, i.e., ‘What JEE Main percentile is required for NIT admission?’
This question cannot be answered with a single numerical answer. Admission into the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is governed by s structured process involving the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the JEE Main exam and also prepares the All India Rank (AIR) list, and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), which administers the centralised counselling for NITs, IIITs, and other Government Funded Technical Institutions.
The required percentile for NIT admission varies every year depending on several factors, which are as follows:-
-
Number of Candidates
-
Category-wise seat distribution
-
Difficulty level of the examination
-
Branch preference
-
Home-state quota
Therefore, understanding how percentile works, how it converts into rank, and how JoSAA uses that rank during counselling is important for interpreting admission chances realistically.
What JEE Main Percentile is Required For NIT Admission?
The percentage score given by the National Testing Agency (NTA) is a relative performance statistic rather than an absolute number. According to the NTA’s official definition, a candidate’s percentile is the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or lower than that candidate in a given session of the examination. This system emerges because the JEE Main is held in numerous sessions. Because question papers vary in difficulty between sessions, NTA uses a normalisation technique to maintain fairness.
Percentile Scores are calculated independently for each session and are then combined to create a single merit list; the distinction is important. A higher percentile does not exactly correspond to a fixed number of marks, nor does it ensure a consistent rank between years. Some students of the JEE Main may face more difficult questions than others. Students who appear in the shift having difficult questions tend to score lower than those who take the easy ones.
To address this issue, a ‘Normalisation procedure based on Percentile Score’ was implemented by the NTA to ensure students were or are not disadvantaged by the examination’s difficulty level. Normalisation is a common approach for comparing candidate scores across multiple shifts, and is also used in other significant educational selection tests in India.
Given below is the JEE Main 2026 percentile distributed category-wise as per the JoSAA counselling, which helps seek admission in some of the NITs:-
| Category | Percentile |
| OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS | 80 - 82+ |
| General | 93.5 - 95+ |
| ST | 48 - 51+ |
| SC | 60- 64+ |
But, simply qualifying does not guarantee a National Institute of Technology (NIT) seat. Actual admission depends on the students' All India Rank (AIR). To secure a seat in NIT, a student generally needs a 99th percentile (under 10,000 rank) to seek admission in the following NITs:-
-
NIT Rourkela
-
MNIT Jaipur
-
NIT Jalandhar
-
NIT Durgapur
-
NIT Goa
The following are the NIRF Rankings of the above-mentioned institute, which offers admission to the institute based on the JEE Percentile:
| Institute Name | NIRF Rankings 2025 | NIRF Rankings 2024 |
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 9 | 9 |
| NIT Surathkal (Karnataka) | 17 | 17 |
| NIT Calicut | 21 | 25 |
| MNNIT Allahabad | 62 | 60 |
| NIT Warangal | 28 | 21 |
| NIT Delhi | 65 | 45 |
| NIT Rourkela | 13 | 19 |

There is no certain JEE Main percentile that ensures admission to an NIT. Admission results are determined by how a percentage translates into an All India Rank and how that rank performs during JoSAA counselling across categories, branches, and quotas.
