Undergraduate (B.Tech)

• Entrance Exam: Need to have a mandatory JEE Main 2026 score.
• Eligibility: Must have 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) with major subjects like Physics and Math.
• Allocation of seats happens through JoSAA 2026 (registration typically starts June 3, 2026).
• Vacant seats to be filled through appearing for CSAB 2026 special rounds in July/August.
• For NRIs and foreign national students can apply through the DASA portal.

Postgraduate Programmes (M.Tech, M.Sc, MCA, MBA)

• M.Tech: Based on GATE 2026 scores, followed by CCMT counseling (scheduled to begin in May 2026).
• M.Sc: Based on IIT JAM 2026 scores, followed by CCMN counseling (beginning around May 14, 2026).
• MCA is based on the NIMCET 2026 rankings and subsequent centralized counseling.
• MBA selection is based on CAT 2025, MAT 2026, or CMAT 2026 scores, followed by an internal group discussion and interview.
• The self-financed M.Tech program requires a separate institute-level admission test and interview (application deadline April 20, 2026).

Doctoral (PhD)

• Application: Register online at the NITK IRIS Portal (open from March 9 to April 27, 2026).
• Submission: The application must be submitted in hard copy to the campus before May 1, 2026.
• Selection is based on a written test and an interview given offline at the Surathkal campus (May 27-29, 2026).
• B.Tech and BSc/ BS- JEE (Main) through the official website of the NTA (nta.ac.in)
• MTech- GATE through the official website of GOAPS (appsgate.iitd.ac.in)
• MSc- IIT JAM through its official website (www.jam.iisc.ac.in)
• NIT Surathkal PhD admission is based on scores obtained by the candidates in their master’s degree.

Candidates have to fulfill the eligibility criteria, submit the required documents and the admissions are completely done on the basis of the results of the respective entrance exams.

Step-by-step application process:

1. Candidates have to appear for the national/state-level entrance examination as per the desired course.
2. Selected candidates will be then called for a personal interview and counselling round.
3. Final admission is done after the verification of documents and payment of fees.

To be eligible for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses offered by NITK, students need to have these qualifications: 

1. Undergraduate (B.Tech): Students must have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. Should also have a qualifying score in GATE 2026 (for M.Tech), IIT JAM 2026 (for M.Sc), or NIMCET 2026 (for MCA). 
2. Postgraduate (M.Tech/M.Sc/MCA) - to enroll for PG courses students need to have a relevant Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC/ST/PwD). Should have secured at least 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD) alongside a valid JEE Main 2026 rank.
3. Doctoral (PhD): Applicants typically require a Master’s degree in a relevant field with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD) and a valid GATE or NET score. For high-performing B.Tech holders (80% or 8.0 CGPA) may apply for Direct PhD with a mandatory GATE score.
