You know it today as IIT Roorkee, one of India’s most prestigious engineering institutions, but what if we told you that for more than 150 years, it wasn’t called IIT Roorkee at all?
Long before JEE Advanced, long before the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) brand became synonymous with elite technical education, this institution carried a very different name, one which was rooted in colonial India and the early days of civil engineering in India. 1847: The Beginning of Thomason College of Engineering
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee traces its origin to 1847, when it was established as the Thomason College of Engineering. Named after Sir James Thomason, the college was created to foster engineers for the British administration. The institution played an important role in training engineers for the Upper Ganga Canal Project, one of the most ambitious irrigation systems of the 19th century.
This was an era when engineering education in India was still emerging, and Roorkee became one of its earliest foundations.
1949: A New Identity for Thomason College of Engineering
After India gained independence in 1947, the institution entered a new phase. In 1949, Thomason College was upgraded and renamed the University of Roorkee. This was a historic milestone. It became India’s first engineering university, marking a shift from a colonial-era technical college to a nationally recognised autonomous university.

The University of Roorkee began contributing significantly to India’s infrastructure, water resource management, structural engineering, and earthquake engineering research.
2001: The IIT Transformation
The most defining moment in its journey came in 2001. Through an amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act, the Government of India granted the University of Roorkee the status of an Indian Institute of Technology. From this point onward, it officially became IIT Roorkee. This transformation meant:-

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee might be a competitive dream location for today’s JEE applicants. However, its history precedes the IIT system. It offers a perspective to realise that the institution did not suddenly become prestigious.
