Years ago, computer science education was offered at research institutions, but did not lead to engineering degrees. The first institute to introduce computer science as an engineering field in India was established in 1963, and official degree programs in Computer Science and Engineering were continuously growing during the 1970s and 1980s.

When we consider modern engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) stands out as a key branch, driving through innovation, powering software ecosystems, and changing professions across industries. However, computer science was not previously recognised as a formal technical discipline in India.

Some students might have thought of this one question, ‘Where and how did computer science begin as an academic discipline in India?' or a question like

‘How did this field grow from a few classrooms to thousands of colleges and universities and institutions across the country?

Let’s trace the very beginning of the first Institute that introduced computer science as an engineering discipline in India.

Which Indian Institute First Introduced Computer Science as an Engineering Discipline in India?

Computer Science as an academic discipline in India did not develop overnight. During the 1950s and 19060s, various scientific institutes offered specialised courses or conducted research in computer science education. For example:-

  • The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Kolkata was among the first Indian institutions to use electronic computers for academic research purposes, including one of the first computer laboratories.

  • Many other scientific research institutes began offering internships, computational training, and diplomas much later.

However, these were not formal engineering specialised courses which were included in an engineering degree.

Computer Science education was first introduced as an engineering discipline in India by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. It began in August 1963 with an IBM 1620 system, also making it the IIT with the oldest department of computer science, which was a novelty at the time in many North American and European colleges. The Department of Computer Science at IIT Kanpur offers a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology), M.Tech (Master of Technology), MS, and PhD programs and also conducts cutting-edge research through various sponsored projects and consulting.
