The Biochemical Engineering Research Centre (BERC) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi spearheaded India’s first recognised academic endeavour in the direction of contemporary biotechnology education.

The Biochemical Engineering Research Centre (BERC) at IIT Delhi was established in 1974  with the then-unprecedented notion that combining biology and chemical engineering might significantly accelerate biotechnology advances. Since 1993, the BERC has been known as the Department of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DBEB). It was also the first department in the country to get considerable extramural research support from overseas agencies.

Over the last few decades, there has been a significant, perhaps revolutionary, shift in our understanding of our life and our ability to change biological systems.
