56th Convocation Of The IIMC Key Highlights 2025

The IIMC (Indian Institute of Mass Communication) hosted the 56th Convocation at the Mahatma Gandhi Manch, New Delhi, on March 4, 2025. The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, who also serves as the Chancellor of the IIMC, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, attended the occasion as the chief guest for the 56th Convocation that the IIMC hosted. 

The 56th Convocation was celebrated to commemorate the achievements of the batch of 2023-24, with 478 students attending the ceremony from 5 regional campuses, namely, Dhenkanal, Aizawl, Amrawati, Kottayam and Jammu. They were conferred with postgraduate diploma Certificates. Moreover, 36 exceptional students were recognised for their academic excellence with medals and cash awards, making it an important milestone in their educational journey.

While addressing the students gathered for the 56th Convocation, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Indian Institute of Mass Communication will be made into a world-class media university. He also emphasised that with the inclusion of world-class curricula, stronger collaborations with the media industry are necessary to meet the rapidly changing communication needs. 

Postgraduate Degree and Diploma Courses offered by the IIMC

Indian Institute of Mass Communication considers communication as an important part of development and is always committed to serving society by imparting world-class teaching, training and research. The training programs of the IIMC are customized to meet the needs of developing countries. Across the country, the Indian Institue of Mass Communication has five regional centres that serve Journalism courses in both English and local languages. 

IIMC currently offers a range of Post-Graduate Degree and Diploma courses across its New Delhi campus and five Regional Centres. Given below is the list of the courses that are offered by the institute:-

  • This program is completed over two years. 

Master's in Strategic Communication

  • This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of global strategic communication.
  •  This course analyses emerging information technology tools with a focus on information warfare, crisis communication, perception and brand management, and geopolitical issues in the rapidly evolving world. 
  • It adopts an interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary approach, aiming to bridge media and global communication with various developmental issues. The span for this course is over two years.

Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (English)

  • This program is designed to enable students to develop fundamental journalism skills while incorporating the latest trends, including advancements in cyber and electronic journalism, to support their overall development.
  • The span of the Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (English) is only one year. 
  • This course is offered in the five regional centres of the IIMC according to seat availability, and they are as follows:-

Post Graduate Diploma in Advertising & Public Relations

  • This course was introduced in 1981 to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the advertising and PR industry. 
  • The Post Graduate Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations aims to develop students with fundamental and rising concepts in advertising and public relations, enabling them to make informed decisions in these fields. 
  • The duration of this course is one year. 

Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Hindi)

  • The Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Hindi) was introduced to meet the rising demand for skilled media professionals in Hindi newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and digital platforms. 
  • This course focuses on imparting conceptual knowledge, operational knowledge and practical skills, particularly in the areas of news gathering, production, presentation, and distribution.
  • The course duration is one year. This course is available in 3 regional centres of the IIMC, and they are as follows:-

Post-Graduation Diploma in Radio & TV Journalism

Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Media

Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Urdu)

  • The Indian Institute of Mass Communication established a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Urdu) as a discipline when the diploma course was introduced in 2013. 
  • Like other diploma programs, this course is also one year long.
  • The primary goal of this course is to train media professionals to adapt to the ever-evolving demands of technology-driven Urdu media. 
  • This course is only offered at the New Delhi Centre of the IIMC with seat availability of only 30 seats. 

Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Odia)

  • The Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Odia) was introduced in 2001 at Dhenkanal to meet the increasing demand for professionals in Odia language media.
  •  It was the first language journalism course launched by IIMC, apart from Hindi. Like other diploma programs, this course also has a duration of one year.
  • This course aims to provide a broader perspective on communication in India, which also highlights the crucial role of journalists in fostering public engagement through effective communication. 

Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Malayalam)

  • The Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Malayalam) was introduced in 2017 at the Kottayam campus to establish high-quality journalism training within a regional context.
  • Over one year, students gain a broad understanding of the communication field, with a specific focus on Malayalam journalism. 
  • The course emphasises ethical values and principles essential for promoting free, fair, and objective media practices.

Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Marathi)

  • The Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Marathi) was launched on August 8, 2017, at the Regional Centre of IIMC in Amravati. 
  • With a total of 30 seats, this one-year program is designed to equip aspiring journalists with essential skills, keeping pace with current trends in journalism, including cyber and electronic media.  
  • The course focuses on the holistic development of students, preparing them for various aspects of their careers.

Five Regional Centres of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication

Given the significant role of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in communication studies, there was a recognised need to expand its presence nationwide to provide world-class education by setting up regional centres.

The first Regional Centre was opened in Dhenkanal, Odisha, in 1994. In September 2009, the Honorable Minister of Information and Broadcasting announced that four more new regional centres would be opened in Jammu and Kashmir in the North, Maharashtra in the West, Mizoram in the North- East, and Kerala in the South. This initiative was included under the Media Infrastructure Development Programme in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17). 

The locations were chosen to ensure better representation of remote and underdeveloped areas. As a result, the IIMC has Five Regional Centres at present, and they are as follows:-
