IIMC Ph.D Programs for Mass Communication and Journalism: Check Eligibility and Course Details

This article provides a summary of the eligibility criteria provided by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication for admission to their recently introduced Ph.D program in Mass Communication and Journalism. It details the eligibility criteria through three different modes being regular mode, part-time mode and UGC-NET qualification.

Offering a Doctor of Philosophy Program in Mass Communication and Journalism, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (Deemed to be University) covers its primary research topics as well as related fields.  To control and promote the quality of the media ecosystem, the Doctoral Program will establish a community of elite academics in communication and media education, management, policy, and related sectors, including journalism, public relations, advertising, and film, among others. 

Ph.D. courses leading to Ph.D. degree awards will be conducted by the Centre for Media and Communication Research (CEMCOR) at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (Deemed to be University). The Indian Institute of Mass Communication has provided rules for regulating the PhD programs and the duration of the PhD courses.

The PhD programs in Mass Communication and Journalism will be offered in regular mode and part-time mode by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. 

Eligibility for Regular Mode Admission to the Ph.D. Program of IIMC

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication has provided a set of eligibility criteria for the aspirants who wish to seek admission through the regular mode of admission in the PhD program. Below is the list of eligibility criteria provided by the IIMC for admission to the PhD program through the regular mode:-

  • A candidate must have a Master's degree in Mass Communication and Journalism in its applied disciplines from a recognised university.

OR

  • A candidate must have a Master's degree in Mass Communication and Journalism after a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science or its applied disciplines.

OR

  • A candidate must have at least secured 55% marks or its equivalent and a qualification in a Master’s in Media and Communication and its related field from a recognised authority.

OR

  • A candidate with a Master of Philosophy degree in Mass Communication and Journalism and must has secured at least 55% marks in the related subjects is eligible for admission.

OR

  • A candidate who is seeking admission to a PhD program after a bachelor's degree with a research component must have secured at least 75% marks or 7.5 CGPA.

OR

  • A candidate who belongs to the reserved category, like Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, OBC, etc, will be offered some relaxation in the marks or grades needed for admission.

OR 

  • A candidate seeking admission to the PhD program of IIMC must have qualified for the UGC-NET examination.

Eligibility for Admission to the PhD program of IIMC through UGC-NET

The admission to the PhD programs of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication through the UGC-NET examination has three categories for which a candidate is eligible. Below is the list of the eligibility criteria for a candidate to seek admission to the PhD program through UGC-NET are as follows:-

Category 1

  • A candidate who has qualified for the NET exam will be eligible to seek admission in the Ph.D. program and can also be hired as an Assistant Professor, and will be awarded JRF.

Category 2

  • A candidate is eligible for the Ph.D program without JRF and can also be hired as an Assistant Professor.

Category 3

  • A candidate is only eligible to join the Ph.D program without JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor.

If the candidate has qualified for the JRF, which comes under Category 1, the candidate will likely appear for an interview only to seek admission to the Ph.D program. If the candidate has qualified for the other two categories, i.e., Category 2 and Category 3, a candidate's admission will be based on 30% on the interview given and 70% will be based on NET exam results.

Eligibility for Part-Time Mode Admission to the Ph.D. Program of IIMC

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication has provided a set of eligibility criteria for the aspirants who wish to seek admission through the part-time mode of admission in the PhD program. Below is the list of eligibility criteria provided by the IIMC for admission to the PhD program through the part-time mode:-

  • A candidate must meet the same qualifications as stated in the eligibility criteria for admission to the Ph.D. program of IIMC through the regular or full-time mode.
  • A candidate must have a regular and permanent job in the field of Media with three years of experience in the same field (contractual or permanent).
