There are 23 IITs run by the government in India. The first IIT was started in 1951 in Kharagpur, West Bengal. These institutes offer equal chances for students to study, do research, and grow in the field of technical education.

To seek admission to the Indian Institute of Technology, a candidate must qualify for the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Advanced exam. According to the NIRF rankings for 2024, there are 10 top-ranked IITs in India. These institutes are marked based on five parameters, namely, Research and Professional Practice, Teaching and Learning Resources, Graduation Outcome, Perception, Outreach and Inclusivity.

Best known for their outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programs are the IIT’s (Indian Institute of Technology). Declared "Institutions of National Importance" by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961, the IITs are independent public higher education institutions. Admission to their BTech programs is quite tough, and they are regarded as India's top engineering universities.

Students can get admission to IITs for bachelor’s, integrated master’s, or dual degree programs by clearing the JEE (Advanced) exam.

Eligibility Criteria for IIT Admission

To get admission into any IIT, students must go through the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). First, they need to clear the JEE Mains exam, and then appear for the JEE Advanced. After qualifying JEE Advanced, they must register for the Joint Seat Allocation Process. The seats are then offered and allotted through an online process managed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

Below is by step-by-step process to seek admission to the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) for students seeking admission to technical education 

JEE Mains:-

  • A candidate must pass class 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects from a recognised board.
  • A candidate belonging to the general category must have at least secured 75% marks in the related subjects.
  • A candidate belonging to the scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, or PwD category must have secured at least 65% marks in the relevant subjects.

JEE Advanced:-

  • A candidate must have qualified the JEE Mains exam and should fall among the top 2.5 lakhs qualified students. 
  • A candidate can sit in the JEE Advanced examination for maximum of two times and in two consecutive years.
  • A candidate has been born on or after October 1, 2000, and a five year relaxation is given to the candidates belonging to the reserved categories.
