The Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, has introduced two new Bachelor of Technology degrees. Since IIT Madras' establishment in 1959, the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering has led the way in interdisciplinary research.
IIT Madras has launched two new B. Tech programs: Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering and Computational Engineering and Mechanics. The sessions of these two new programs will commence in July 2025. This program will only be available to students who qualify for the JEE (Advanced) 2025. The program will be offered to students through the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling and has a seat intake of only 40 students.
These newly introduced dynamic programs will give students a solid systemic approach to problem solving by fusing fundamental engineering principles with the newest technological developments. Graduates of these programs will be qualified to take on leadership roles in academia and industry as they tackle difficult real-world problems.
B.Tech. Program in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering of IITM
The newly introduced B.Tech program in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering under the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, offers admissions to those candidates who have qualified the JEE (Advanced) 2025.
The duration of this program will be 4 years. This program combines a solid foundation in electrical and instrumentation engineering with core biomedical engineering to prepare students to create next-generation medical devices. With an emphasis on biomedical engineering, its unique structure combines basic engineering courses with contemporary, application-driven subjects like:-
- IoT
- Artificial intelligence
- Web-enabled Medical technology
- Healthcare
The program fosters innovation in diagnostics and therapies while preparing graduates for leadership and entrepreneurial roles in the medical device industry, rehabilitation technologies, and AI-driven healthcare systems. The program will help students become professionally skilled in designing clinically approved and ethical solutions to tackle the challenges of healthcare.
