The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is the IIT that has a campus across multiple locations. The main campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is in the Hauz Khas area in Delhi, and has two additional campuses, the Sonepat Campus and Jhajjhar Campus. The international campus of IIT Delhi is in Abu Dhabi.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of India’s 23 IITs designated as centres of excellence of science, engineering, and technology education, research and development.

  • IIT Delhi was established in 1961 and was later designated as an Institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963 and was then renamed as Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

  • The institute was granted Deemed University status, allowing it to set its own academic policies, administer exams, and give degrees. The Institute was recognised as an ‘Institute of Eminence’ by the Indian government in 2018.

  • The main campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi spans 320 acres. The campus showcases a balance between architectural and natural beauty, with scenic landscapes, diverse buildings and well-maintained roadways. 

  • IIT Delhi has expanded its borders. It has developed an extension campus in Sonepat, Haryana, on 50 acres of land. It is a technopark with advanced facilities that has been established there. A 50-acre extension campus in Jhajjar, Haryana, is also planned.
