A student trapped under the debris of the collapsed Satya Niketan building called his friend and shared his location, asking for help. His friends rushed to the spot and tried to pull him out, but were cautioned and pushed back by police and others at the site amid concerns that surrounding buildings could also be unsafe. He was later rescued after nearly two hours by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team present at the spot.
Neeraj Bawa was trapped under the debris, pinned from the pelvic area downwards, when he called his friend Anmol Yadav for help. Anmol and his friends immediately reached the spot after Neeraj shared his location and details with them.
Anmol, while speaking to the media, said, “When we reached him, he handed us his phone; just as we were trying to pull him out, the police pushed us all back. He remained trapped there for another two hours because people were saying other buildings might collapse too—there are many old buildings in the area.”
“Eventually, the NDRF personnel and the police worked together to get him out and sent him to Primus Hospital,” Anmol said. He also raised concerns about the availability of hostel facilities for Delhi University students, saying they have limited accommodation options.
Priyanshi, whose brother went missing following the Satya Niketan building collapse, said she had not seen him at the hospital or elsewhere and that the administration had not contacted her. She said she learnt about the collapse through social media.
“I found out through social media that a building had collapsed in South Campus and that my brother was inside. I came here, but I have no information about whether he is in the hospital, whether he has been rescued, or where he is. No one from the administration contacted me. I also went to AIIMS. I saw all the children who had been hospitalised there, but my brother was not among them, and I have no idea where he is. His name is Pawan, and it had not even been a month since he shifted to this PG. I spoke to him last night,” Priyanshi said while speaking to the media.
NSUI President Vinod Jakhar said, “We shared his photograph in our group. We hope that he is safe. We pray to God that he is safe.”
Six students are reported to have died and several others were injured after an around 50-year-old, five-storey building housing a boys’ PG in a congested lane in Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus collapsed on Sunday afternoon at around 1:30 pm.
Several injured people were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and are undergoing treatment. Search and rescue operations are continuing at the site, with NDRF teams using canine units to identify possible locations where people may be trapped.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has ordered the demolition of building number 13 after declaring it dangerous. The civic body gave the owner three days to comply with the order and warned of demolition if the directive was not followed.
