The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu and the Ladakh administration have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a satellite campus of the institute in Leh. The initiative is aimed at expanding access to management education for students in the Union Territory.
The MoU was signed on Friday in the presence of Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, according to officials.
The new satellite campus will offer a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Honours programme. The initial intake for the programme will be 60 students, with classes scheduled to begin in October.
Around 600 candidates interested
The proposed BBA programme has already attracted interest from students, with around 600 candidates expressing interest in the 60 available seats, officials said.
The campus infrastructure was established within two months of the initiative being taken up by the Ladakh administration and IIM Jammu.
A satellite campus is an additional campus of an educational institution located away from its main campus. It operates under the parent institution and offers selected academic programmes and other facilities.
What Ladakh LG said
Saxena said the establishment of the satellite campus would mark a significant development for higher education in Ladakh and create opportunities for young people in areas including knowledge, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional development.
He said students from Ladakh seeking quality management and professional education have traditionally had to move outside the Union Territory. This involved additional expenses related to travel, accommodation, food, books and other requirements.
According to the report, the Lieutenant Governor said bringing management education closer to students in Ladakh could reduce these barriers and allow more young people to pursue higher education without leaving the Union Territory.
Saxena also said the campus would contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.
The MoU signing was attended by Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, IIM Jammu Board of Governors Chairman Milind Kamble, IIM Jammu Director B S Sahay, Secretary Higher Education Bhanu Prabha and senior officials from the Ladakh administration and IIM Jammu.
