What are the types of internship available at Google?
Google primarily offers Technical and Product Management Internships to students pursuing graduate, post graduate and Ph.D Degrees in Computer Science and other related fields. For graduate students usually the 3rd and 4th year students are preferred. Also, if you happen to be from any other field but have a sound knowledge of coding and algorithms, you have equal chances at getting selected.
Google also offers summer internships for second year MBA students that usually last for the duration of 10-12 weeks and are offered in various functions across the company. However, do keep in mind that you must apply early on for the internship i.e. between the months of October and January. Most of positions are filled by the month of February.
How to Apply?
Online Application: You can directly apply at the Google Internship Portal. All you will need for that is your updated resume and a transcript.
Mailing the Google HR: Although a little tricky but worth the try. Try and get hold of the Google HR email id from either a pervious intern or someone who know worked at Google. Mail directly to the HR clearly stating your goals along with a well drafted resume and a cover letter.
Employee Referral: If in your search for a Google Employee for the previous point you come across a current Google employee ask them to refer you. It even might be a friend of a friend, doesn't matter, any referral is better than no referral. You can also find someone on Facebook or LinkedIn. But, remember this will only get you through the screening process. The process after that is same for everybody.
Google Summer of Code: It's not exactly an internship at Google but it's a global program sponsored by Google. Students here work independently on a project, under a mentor with open source organizations that are previously shortlisted by Google. Interested students can contact the mentor organization they want to intern with and submit a project proposal. The internship is a virtual, work from home opportunity.
What Happens After Applying?
Once the application process is completed your resume and transcripts will be evaluated by the recruitment teams. Upon clearing this process you will be called in for a round of technical interviews either over phone or in Google office situated across the country. Most of the interviews will be focused to assess your knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms. You familiarity with Google's functions and its products and services may also be tested.
Hiring Committee :
Members of the Hiring Committee review your resume, your interviews, cover letters and transcripts along with any other related documents. If you seem eligible, your details and all information is placed into a host matching pool.
This is the step that requires patience for there is no way to speed up this process. Well, that is unless you happen to have an insider knowledge on which team is looking for an intern. Once, a potential host is matched to your application, the process starts again followed by another set of interview rounds. This round is generally non-technical the interviewers usually encourage you share some details about yourself like your hobbies and your interests trying to determine your compatibility for the team.
For Google Summer Code, once your application is shortlisted you spend a month interning at the organization before you start on the coding process. After that you usually have 3 months to work on the project to code or any other deadlines as per agreed upon by you and your mentor.
