Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, celebrated its 67th Foundation Day on March 10, 2026. The event has been held honouring the contributions of its faculty members and alumni who left their mark in chosen fields of profession. The foundation Day marked more than six decades of academic excellence, pioneering research and global contributions in science, technology and innovation. 

As per the details provided, the IIT Bombay Foundation Day event was held in the presence of the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Balram Bhargava, Padma Shri; National Academy of Sciences Meghnad Saha Distinguished National Chair; Immediate Past DG of ICMR; Immediate Past Secretary, Department of Health Research, GoI; Former Chief of Cardiothoracic Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi and Former President of National Academy of Sciences, India.

The ceremony began with a welcome address by Director of IIT Bombay Prof. Shireesh Kedare, who highlighted the Institute’s remarkable journey and its continued pursuit of academic and research excellence. In his inaugural address, Prof. Kedare mentioned the challenges faced over the years and also highlighted the need to change the way of teaching and doing research. He also emphasised the need to focus on exciting students to learn, be excellent in research and be relevant to the industry and society.

Dr Balram Bhargava, Chief Guest at the event, mentioned in his address that with India reaching its 80th year of independence, the journey demonstrates how science, innovation and determination can transform national challenges into opportunities. He spoke about the Green and White Revolutions, breakthroughs in space, healthcare and digital technologies through which the country has shown that with the right mindset and commitment, remarkable progress can be achieved.

He also added that institutions like IIT Bombay play an important role in nurturing the spirit of innovation and excellence, and the alumni continue to carry the country's flag proudly across the world. 

The Foundation Day celebration also featured the presentation of prestigious Institute Awards recognising excellence in teaching, research and contributions to society.

IIT Bombay 67th Foundation Day Awards

The award ceremony included the IIT Bombay Prof. S.C  Sahasrabudhe Lifetime Achievement Award, which was granted to Prof. Rajiv Dusane, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, recognising his outstanding contributions as teacher, researcher and administrator.

Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences (2025)' was conferred on Prof. K.G. Suresh, Department of Physics for his outstanding contributions in the area of Magnetism in Intermetallics, Spintronics, Magnetic Skyrmions, and Topological Materials. The 'Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences (2025)’ was conferred on Prof. R.S. Jangid, Department of Civil Engineering, for his outstanding contributions in the area of Seismic Base Isolation, Earthquake-Resistant Design, Stochastic Earthquake Analysis, and Inerter-Based Control Devices.

The institute also recognised select alumni from IIT Bombay with the Distinguished Alumnus Awards (DAA) who have excelled in their field of work and made the institute proud. The awardees this year include: Prof. Y.S. Prakash, Dr Abhay Pandey, Prof. Srinivasan S. Iyengar Dr. Kalyan Handique, Prof. Prashant J. Shenoy, Dr Mahesh Kumar, Mr Kirat Patel Dr. Subrata Rakshit, Mr K.B.S. Anand Dr. Ranjit Rath, and Dr Sachin Katti

The Young Alumni Achiever Awards (YAAA) were conferred on Prof. B. Aditya Prakash, Prof. Aaditya Ramdas, Prof. Gauri Joshi, Mr Rohit Agarwal, Mr Sibabrata (Shibam) Das, Mr Sneh Vaswani, and Ms Ashima Mittal for their outstanding achievements in their chosen field of work and are below 40 years of age.

In line with the institute's commitment to sustainability and cleanliness, the Institute Cleanliness Award was also presented during the event, dedicated efforts of various academic departments, Section 8 companies, hostels and non-academic sections/ buildings in creating and maintaining a Clean, Green and Happy Campus. The winners for the various categories are given below. 

A. ACADEMIC UNITS: 

1st Position: Department of Earth Sciences 

2nd Position: Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research 

3rd Position: Department of Mechanical Engineering

B. NON-ACADEMIC UNITS: 

1st Position: Hospitality Section 

2nd Position: Gymkhana 

3rd Position: Hospital 

C. SECTION 8 COMPANIES/ EXTERNALLY FUNDED CENTRES/ LABS.: 

1st Position: IITB-Monash Research Academy 

2nd Position: Technology Innovation Hub Foundation for IoT and IoE 

3rd Position: Green Energy and Sustainability Hub

D. HOSTELS: 

1st Position: Hostel 01 

2nd Position: Hostel 10 

3rd Position: Hostel 18 

E. ZONAL AREAS OF JUNIOR ENGINEERS: 

1st Position: Er. Amol Deshmukh (Zone 13 - Lake Side Area) 

2nd Position: Er. Ani. P. P (Zone 1 - Hostel Area) 

3rd Position: Er. Prashant Bote (Zone 6 - Central Area) 

The function was held in the physical presence of the awardees, their family members, Institute functionaries and invited dignitaries.
