1. World Iodine Deficiency Day-21st October
World Iodine Deficiency Day, also known as Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day, is observed annually on 21st October. The day is observed to raise awareness about the essential role of iodine in maintaining good health and to emphasize the consequences of iodine deficiency.
Globally, an estimated 1.88 billion people are at risk of inadequate iodine intake, impacting nearly 30% of school-aged children.
- The WHO and UNICEF have championed universal salt iodization since 1993, resulting in over 120 countries adopting iodization programs.
- The Government of India initiated national efforts to combat the problem through the National Goitre Control Programme (NGCP) in 1962.
- In 1992, the program was renamed the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP). Aim was to cover a wider range of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) and ensure its implementation across the country.
Goal- - To reduce the prevalence of IDD to below 5% nationwide.
To achieve100% consumption of adequately iodized salt (with 15 ppm of iodine) at the household level. - A major policy decision was made in 1984 to iodize all edible salt in India, which became a phased initiative starting in 1986.
- Presently, India produces 65 lakh metric tonnes of iodized salt annually, which is sufficient to meet the needs of its population.
2. PM Modi Inaugurates 03 Airports under RCS-UDAN
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three airports developed under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) across the country. It is expected that the flights under RCS-UDAN will begin from these airports shortly.
- These three airports are- Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh and Saharanpur in UP.
RCS-UDAN - The RCS- UDAN was launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on October 21, 2016, with a 10-year vision.
- RCS-UDAN has connected 34 States/UTs across the length and breadth of the country.
- A total of 86 aerodromes have been operationalized under UDAN.
- Ten airports have been operationalized in the Northeast region in addition to two heliports.
3. Joint Military Training (JMT) Exercise
The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) have commenced the 12th edition of the Joint Military Training (JMT) in West Bengal.

5. Maritime Exercise "Naseem-Al-Bahr"
The Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise known as "Naseem-Al-Bahr" was conducted in Goa from 13 to 18 October 24.
- INS Trikand and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, with Royal Navy of Oman Vessel Al Seeb participated in the Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise.
- The exercise is part of a process in achieving its aims of enhancing interoperability, fostering mutual understanding, and strengthening cohesion between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman.
