From NIRF Rank 3 to 7: Decoding IIM Calcutta's NIRF Ranking Shift

IIM Calcutta NIRF Ranking: The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has witnessed a notable change in its position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Management rankings over the past few years. After holding Rank 3 for seven consecutive years from 2016 to 2022, IIM Calcutta slipped to Rank 4 in 2023, Rank 5 in 2024 and Rank 7 in 2025.

The fall, however, did not reflect a collapse in placements or graduation outcomes. IIM Calcutta continued to record exceptionally strong scores in the Graduation Outcomes (GO) parameter, while its teaching and learning score also remained relatively strong. The bigger issue was that other management institutes improved faster in parameters such as Research and Professional Practice (RPC), teaching resources and perception, changing the competitive equation.

The latest official NIRF data shows why the institute's position can change significantly even when its placement performance remains strong. NIRF does not rank institutes only on salary packages or placements; it combines teaching resources, research, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception to calculate the overall score.

IIM Calcutta NIRF Ranking: From Rank 3 to Rank 7

What Actually Pulled IIM Calcutta Down?

The important point is that IIM Calcutta did not suddenly become weaker in every area. Its ranking was affected by how its performance compared with other institutes.

In NIRF 2025, IIM Calcutta scored:

The data shows a clear pattern: Graduation Outcomes remained extremely strong, while Research & Professional Practice was substantially lower than several competing institutes.

Placements Were Not the Main Problem

IIM Calcutta's Graduation Outcomes score was 98.87 in NIRF 2025, demonstrating that placement and higher-study outcomes continued to be one of its strongest areas.

This means the ranking decline cannot simply be explained by students getting poorer employment outcomes.

The institute was still performing strongly on the metric that matters most to many MBA aspirants, what happens to students after graduation.

However, NIRF evaluates several other areas simultaneously. As a result, maintaining a high placement score is not necessarily enough to maintain the same overall rank.

Research Became the Bigger Gap

The more noticeable gap was in Research and Professional Practice. IIM Calcutta's RPC score stood at 54.52 in NIRF 2025, compared with 59.80 for IIM Lucknow, 60.18 for IIM Mumbai, 59.69 for IIM Indore, 64.14 for IIM Kozhikode and 64.92 for IIM Ahmedabad.

This is where competing institutions were able to gain ground. NIRF's research-related assessment considers factors including publications, citations, patents, research projects and related research performance. Therefore, an institute needs more than classroom teaching and placements to score strongly on this component.

What Does IIM Calcutta Need to Do to Move Back Up?

The NIRF data points towards several areas that can influence IIM Calcutta's future position.

1. Increase Research Output: Research is the most obvious area where the institute has room to close the gap with some competitors. More high-quality publications, citations, research projects and other recognised research contributions can strengthen the RPC component.

2. Improve Research-Industry Linkages: Research is not restricted to academic papers. NIRF also considers professional practice and related institutional activities. Greater collaboration with industry, funded projects, consulting-linked research and executive education can potentially strengthen this part of the profile.

3. Continue Protecting Placement Performance: The institute's biggest strength should not be neglected while it works on other areas. Its GO score was already 98.87 in NIRF 2025. Maintaining strong placement and higher-study outcomes remains important because competing institutes are also reporting strong graduate outcomes. 

4. Strengthen Teaching and Resources: IIM Calcutta's TLR score was 85.28 in NIRF 2025. While this is a strong score, competing institutions can still gain ground by improving faculty strength, faculty qualifications, student resources and financial investment in teaching infrastructure.

5. Maintain Institutional Perception: Perception also matters in the NIRF formula. IIM Calcutta's perception score was 85.23 in 2025, while IIM Bangalore scored 100 and IIM Ahmedabad 93.26. Maintaining its longstanding reputation while strengthening academic and research visibility can therefore influence future rankings.

What Are Other IIMs Doing Differently?

The ranking data shows that India's top management institutes are no longer competing only through placements.

IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore, for example, combine strong graduation outcomes with strong research, teaching and perception scores. In NIRF 2025, IIM Ahmedabad scored 64.92 in RPC and IIM Bangalore scored 59.04, while their GO scores were 98.72 and 98.86 respectively. 

IIM Kozhikode also performed strongly across TLR, research, graduation outcomes and outreach, helping it remain at Rank 3 in 2025.

IIM Lucknow and IIM Mumbai also moved ahead of IIM Calcutta in the 2025 ranking, with particularly competitive scores across multiple parameters. 

This means the competition has changed: IIM Calcutta is not necessarily losing its core strength; other institutions are strengthening more dimensions of their performance at the same time.
