UK Student Visa: The number of applications for UK sponsored study visas has declined significantly, with applications from main applicants falling 16% in the year ending August 2026, according to the latest Home Office data. The decline comes amid tighter UK immigration policies, restrictions on dependents and changes to post-study work options for international students.
The latest figures show that the UK continues to attract international students, but changes to immigration rules and uncertainty around employment after graduation are influencing decisions about studying in the country.
UK Student Visa Applications: Latest Numbers
The Home Office data shows that 360,700 applications were made by main applicants in the year ending August 2026. This was down from the previous year.
Applications from student dependants also fell sharply, declining 22% to 17,000. Together, main applicants and dependents accounted for 377,700 applications during the September 2025-August 2026 period, compared with 449,800 in the previous cycle.

August UK Student Visa Applications Drop Below 1 Lakh
August is traditionally one of the busiest months for UK student visa applications because students prepare for the September academic intake. However, the latest data shows that the August peak has weakened considerably.
Main-applicant applications stood at around 144,200 in August 2022 and 147,200 in August 2023. The figure then declined to 122,100 in August 2024, 120,300 in August 2025 and approximately 99,500 in August 2026.
Why Are UK Student Visa Applications Falling?
The decline comes against the backdrop of several immigration policy changes. The UK has tightened rules around international student migration, particularly concerning dependents and post-study work options.
One of the most significant changes came into effect on January 1, 2024, when most international students were prevented from bringing dependents to the UK. Exceptions continue for certain students, including those enrolled in eligible postgraduate research programmes.
The impact is visible in dependent applications. They have fallen from 156,400 in 2022-23 to 68,200 in 2023-24, 21,900 in 2024-25 and 17,000 in 2025-26.
UK Graduate Visa Changes for International Students
Another important factor for prospective students is the change to the Graduate visa route.
Under the current rules, eligible graduates who apply on or before December 31, 2026 can receive a two-year Graduate visa. For applications made on or after January 1, 2027, the duration for most graduates will reduce to 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates will continue to receive a three-year period.
The Graduate route allows eligible international graduates to remain in the UK after completing their studies and work or look for work without requiring sponsorship immediately. The route itself is not a settlement route.
