The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new academic circular introducing Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) resource books for students of Classes 3 to 8. The move, announced through Circular No. Acad-18/2026 dated April 9, 2026, is aimed at strengthening skill-based learning in line with the National Education Policy (NEP).
According to the official notification, the newly launched materials include student handbooks and teacher guides, which will be used as supplementary learning resources in classrooms. These books are not standalone subjects but will be integrated with the existing Mathematics curriculum to ensure a seamless learning experience.
CBSE to Integrate AI Concepts with Mathematics Curriculum
CBSE has clarified that the CT and AI resource books will be implemented alongside Mathematics teaching, allowing students to develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills through subject-based learning. The integration is designed to introduce modern technological concepts without increasing academic burden.
The board stated that this approach will help students understand key concepts such as pattern recognition, sequencing, and data handling through familiar topics, making learning more relatable and effective.
Focus on Application-Based Learning, Not Rote Methods
The circular emphasises a shift from traditional rote learning to application-based and experiential learning. Students will be encouraged to explore real-life scenarios, solve problems using multiple approaches, and engage in classroom discussions.
CBSE has underlined that the focus will remain on the process of thinking rather than just correct answers, marking a transition towards competency-based education and critical thinking development.
Changes Announced for Higher Classes
CBSE has also announced modifications for secondary classes as part of this update. The existing Artificial Intelligence subject in Class 9 will be discontinued from the academic session 2026–27. However, students currently in Class 10 during the 2025–26 session will continue under the existing scheme.
For Classes 9 to 12, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will introduce CT and AI modules, which will be used primarily for internal assessments and interdisciplinary learning.
Teachers Asked to Adopt Flexible, Activity-Based Methods
The board has advised teachers to adopt flexible teaching strategies that encourage discussion, exploration, and analytical thinking. The resource books include activity-based exercises, case studies, and real-world problem scenarios to make classrooms more interactive.
CBSE noted that these materials are designed to build conceptual clarity and curiosity among students, rather than focusing solely on examination outcomes.
Implementation from Academic Session 2026–27
Schools affiliated with CBSE have been directed to access the CT and AI resource materials through the official academic website and begin implementation from the 2026–27 academic session.
