International Physics Olympiad 2026: India achieved a clean sweep at the 2026 International Physics Olympiad, with all five team members winning gold medals a feat last accomplished in 2018. Trained by Mumbai's HBCSE-TIFR, the students excelled across grueling five-hour theoretical and experimental examinations covering complex thermodynamic, fluid, and optical physics.
International Physics Olympiad 2026: India earned a stunning joint World No. 1 ranking in the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026 held in Bucaramanga, Colombia from July 5, 2026 to July 12, 2026. 381 talented students from 87 competing nations took part in this event. The Indian team consisting of five students had a brilliant performance, securing all Gold medals in a clean sweep. This is the second time in 27 years when India has participated in the competition, with the previous success coming in 2018.
With its immaculate gold medal record, India earned itself a tie for the top ranking on the world medal table along with five other nations like China, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan. This achievement is indicative of the increasing competence of the country's advanced science education system. National organization of the competition was conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR), Department of Atomic Energy, where the rigorous training and guidance of these future scientists enabled them to perform brilliantly on the international platform against the cream of the world's talent pool.

This achievement is only the second time in India's 27-year history participating in the International Physics Olympiad that all members of the team have received gold medals, replicating their great success achieved back in 2018. Over the past 10 years, India has been enjoying a fantastic run where every participant has managed to bring either a gold or silver medal to their country.
In order to achieve such success, the participants had to pass an extremely tough five-hour theoretical examination, covering such complicated subjects as the thermodynamics of paramagnetic cooling, caustics and cusps in light reflection inside a coffee cup, and photoionization of ozone. Moreover, the students managed to pass a five-hour-long experimental examination related to thermodynamic processes and heat transfer in fluids. The whole team was well-prepared by the Physics Olympiad Cell at Mumbai's Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR).
