PhD scholars and students of Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) began an indefinite sit-in at the Kashmere Gate campus on Monday September 28, 2026. The protest asks for a complete withdrawal of a July 31 circular that made attendance compulsory for research scholars. The sit-in was organised by the AUD Student Council Karampura (AUDSC KP) and the Joint Action Committee of AUD PhD scholars. The All India Students’ Association (AISA) also joined them. Organisers Call It Forced Surveillance
The groups have been agitating for over two months. They describe the attendance rule as forced surveillance and they point to an acute infrastructural crisis on campus. On September 22 they gave a Chalo KG call and hundreds of students joined the march. The registrar then convened a meeting with the protestors. After that meeting a notice was issued on September 24. The notice said the PhD attendance-cum-whereabouts registry would be kept in abeyance until the infrastructure crisis is resolved. The notification came from Professor Satyaketu Sankrit. He is the Dean Academic Affairs and also the Chief Proctor. It warned that any unauthorised absence from on-campus research work would be penalised as per the rules. It added that such absence would have a direct bearing on the fellowship a scholar receives. The students turned the notice down as insufficient. They want a complete rollback of all circulars released on July 31.
Demands of the Protestors
The protesting students have four main demands. They want a complete reversal of all July 31 circulars. They want an end to the garrisoning of campus spaces and removal of iron gates. They want the PhD fee waiver reinstated. They also want student representation at all levels of university decision-making. This includes the board of management and the infrastructure grievance redressal committees. Mrinalini is a CC member of AUDSC KP. She said their campus is falling apart in front of them. She listed infrastructure and faculty and basic dignity and student rights. She added that the administration of a university named after Ambedkar meets them with pure apathy.
