Andhra Pradesh textbooks: The government of Andhra Pradesh has made an official revision to the primary school textbooks to remove stereotypical gender representation in order to promote gender respect from a young age. In an event hosted by Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI), Nara Lokesh, the state Human Resources Development (HRD) and Information Technology Minister, has revealed the essential details of the new revisions along with educational reforms taking place in the state.
With the new curriculum, books of Classes 1 and 2, which used to show all household activities as tasks undertaken only by women, now depict an equally divided 50-50 representation of the duties of men and women in order to promote gender equality even from Class 1. It is to be noted that this revision is just one aspect of the entire system change, which is based on value-based education, gender sensitization, curriculum improvement and technology-enabled learning. Some of the state-level initiatives include keeping Saturdays as “No Bag Days” with practical knowledge like family budgeting, field trips and introduction to Artificial Intelligence.
Andhra Pradesh Textbooks: Key Highlights of the Educational Reforms
Below are the key highlights related ot the the school textbooks to erase gender stereotypes and promote equality:
50-50 Representation of Household Chores
Gender Bias Issues: Previously in Class 1 and Class 2 textbooks, there was depiction of only females taking up all the housework duties.
Equal Sharing of Housework: In the new curriculum, the 50-50 sharing of housework duties is depicted for both male and female genders from Grade 1.
No Bag Day on Saturdays
Saturday is declared as “No Bag Day” for all the state schools, which includes real-life learning and learning practical skills. The activities consist of site visits, practical finance (managing budgets in households as well as farms), and basics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including both advantages and disadvantages of new technologies.
Technology-Driven Interactive Classrooms
Gamified Learning: There will be a system where every 45 minutes of lectures will be followed by a video summary in less than 60 to 90 seconds and some clicker-based quizzes.
AI Driven Learning Management System (LMS): The responses from the students will be used by the state’s LMS through the LEAP app to identify the particular concept gaps (like probability in math).
Continuous Curriculum Alignment
The state has undertaken two successive stages of incremental reforms of the curriculum to achieve alignment of school education with higher education and industrial needs.
