Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen has emerged as the winning candidate in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Vice-President election 2026. Shokeen built a lead of more than 13,000 votes over his closest rivals and secured over 30,000 votes in the final round.
The Vice-President contest has attracted attention as Shokeen is contesting as an Independent against candidates against major student organisations including ABVP, NSUI and SFI.
Who Is Deepanshu Shokeen?
Deepanshu Shokeen is a Delhi University student from Peeragarhi. He is pursuing studies in Buddhist Studies and has previously completed his graduation from Bhagat Singh College.
Shokeen comes from a modest family background. His father is employed as a bus conductor, while his mother works as an Anganwadi worker. His family background, along with his decision to contest the DUSU election as an Independent, has drawn attention during the campaign.
Shokeen entered the DUSU election as an Independent candidate. His candidature became notable because he was associated with NSUI before deciding to contest independently after not receiving the organisation’s ticket.

Why Did Deepanshu Shokeen Contest As An Independent?
Shokeen was among the students seeking an NSUI ticket for the DUSU election. However, after he was not selected as the organisation’s candidate for Vice-President, he decided to remain in the race as an Independent.
He is contesting against ABVP’s Ishu Maurya, NSUI’s Vir Chatrath and other candidates in the Vice-President race.
His decision to continue as an Independent made the contest different from the traditional direct competition between the major student organisations.
Deepanshu Shokeen’s Campaign
Student accommodation and safety were among the major issues discussed during this year’s DUSU campaign. The issue gained additional attention following the Satya Niketan PG building collapse, which killed seven people, including five Delhi University students.
Shokeen also campaigned on student-related concerns and attracted support during his campaign across the university’s colleges.
Deepanshu Shokeen Leads Vice-President Race
The latest counting trends have placed Shokeen comfortably ahead in the Vice-President contest. After nine rounds of counting, he had already established a lead of more than 5,000 votes.
As counting progressed further, his advantage crossed the 13,000-vote mark. The result is significant because he is contesting without the backing of one of the major student organisations.
