A government school in Gokalpur village in northeast Delhi is in the news for a troubling reason. Students of the evening shift of GBSSS Gokalpur have claimed that they were not allowed to use the drinking water facility in the school. The complaint was raised by class 12 students and it has now led to an inquiry by the education department. The case has raised serious questions about how double shift schools manage basic facilities for all their students.
Students Speak Out and a Video Goes Viral
Class 12 students of GBSSS Gokalpur claimed that the access to the drinking water facility was locked after the morning shift ended. They said that the water point remained out of reach for everyone studying in the afternoon and evening shifts. The students also said that they raised this issue with the school authorities but they were still not given access to the water facility. A video showing the gate of the water facility locked has also been circulated on the internet and it has drawn wide attention to the matter. Advocate Ashok Agarwal of the Delhi High Court supported the claim of the students. He said that the class 12 students had sent video messages to him and he then raised the issue with the Department of Education.
Inquiry Team Finds Water Points Locked on Several Floors
After the complaint was received a team of senior education department officials and two school principals visited the school. The team found that the access to the drinking water facility was closed on several floors of the building. The team also recorded statements from people present in the school including the class 12 students. The school officials were instructed to ensure that afternoon and evening shift students do not have to face such issues again. The officials also told the school authorities that the morning shift staff members must share this responsibility. A separate team of school heads visited the school premises on Monday to investigate why the drinking water facilities on various floors were kept locked during the afternoon shift. The UDISE+ 2025-26 data states that all schools in Delhi have functional drinking water facilities. However the school norms of Delhi require proper arrangements to ensure the supply of drinking water to students and the Delhi government has also stated that school managements are responsible for providing potable drinking water.
