The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) on Monday issued a fresh statement regarding the death of student Sahil Wakode, apologising for details mentioned in its earlier communication. The institute said the circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation by the appropriate authorities.
IIT Bombay Apologises for Earlier Statement
In its latest communication, IIT Bombay said it was inappropriate to describe or characterise events preceding Sahil’s death before those details had been established through the appropriate investigative process.
The institute expressed regret over its earlier statement and said the circumstances surrounding the student’s death remain subject to investigation.
The clarification comes amid protests on the IIT Bombay campus following Sahil’s death. Students have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident and have demanded an independent investigation.

What Happened at IIT Bombay?
Sahil Wakode, a 20-year-old second-year BTech student in Energy Science and Engineering, died on Friday. According to reports, he had been found with a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination shortly before his death.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have since become the subject of an investigation. Sahil’s family has also filed an FIR naming a professor and other institute officials, according to reports.
Students Protest, Submit 18 Demands
Following the incident, students staged protests on the IIT Bombay campus and submitted an 18-point charter of demands to the institute administration.
The demands include an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sahil’s death, greater accountability, improvements to mental-health support and changes to academic and disciplinary procedures.
During a meeting with protesting students on Sunday, IIT Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare signed the students’ 18-point charter. The institute has said that due process will be followed, while the details of the agreement are expected to be formally discussed with students.
IIT Bombay Denies Director’s Resignation
Amid the protests, reports circulated claiming that IIT Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare had resigned.
The institute has denied these reports, describing them as fake news and stating that Kedare has not resigned from his position.

For students and the institute community, the immediate focus remains on establishing the circumstances surrounding Sahil’s death and addressing the concerns raised by protesters.
