Jadavpur University has constituted a 24-member committee to plan and oversee the utilisation of funds received under the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), university officials said.
24-Member Committee Constituted
The committee will be headed by acting Registrar Debjit Dutta, who will serve as its convener. The panel will prepare proposals detailing how the funds available under PM-USHA can be utilised for the university’s development.
The proposals prepared by the committee will subsequently be placed before the university’s Executive Council for consideration and approval.

What Is PM-USHA?
PM-USHA is the Centre’s revamped higher education scheme that replaced the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). The scheme provides financial assistance to eligible higher education institutions for improving infrastructure, academic facilities and other development-related activities.
West Bengal Joins PM-USHA
The committee has been formed after West Bengal decided to participate in the PM-USHA scheme. According to university officials, members of the panel have been nominated by the state Higher Education Department.
Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya said the West Bengal Higher Education Minister has also nominated a representative to attend meetings of the university’s Executive Council.
West Bengal had earlier not participated in the centrally sponsored scheme. The previous Trinamool Congress-led state government had raised objections to the use of the “PM” prefix in centrally sponsored education schemes. As a result, universities in the state could not access financial assistance available under PM-USHA.
Rs 250 Crore Allocation
Separately, Jadavpur University has also constituted an “Institute of Eminence Committee”. The move follows the West Bengal government’s announcement of a Rs 250 crore allocation for the university in its budget.
According to university authorities, the allocation is expected to support infrastructure development and research-related activities. The newly formed committee will work on planning initiatives linked to the proposed financial support.
What Happens Next?
The PM-USHA committee will prepare detailed proposals on the utilisation of the funds. These proposals will then be placed before the university’s Executive Council for further consideration.
The initiatives are aimed at planning the use of government funding for strengthening Jadavpur University’s academic, research and infrastructure facilities.
