The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a special drive to increase student enrolment in its schools amid concerns over declining admissions. The civic body has set a target of 50,000 fresh admissions within one month and has directed teachers to reach out to families in their local areas.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the MCD Education Committee chaired by committee chairman Yogesh Verma. Officials have been asked to prepare a special enrolment campaign involving teachers, parents, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community representatives.
Teachers to Conduct Door-to-Door Campaign
As part of the admission drive, teachers will visit their respective localities every Saturday and interact with families. They will encourage parents to enrol their children in MCD schools and inform them about the facilities and educational opportunities available.
The Education Department has also been directed to intensify the “School Chalo Abhiyan” to reach more families and improve enrolment. Teachers who secure 75 new admissions will also be considered for the “Nagar Nigam Shikshak Award”, according to the civic body.

Focus on School Facilities
The admission campaign will be accompanied by efforts to improve basic infrastructure in MCD schools. Officials have been instructed to identify schools that require repair and maintenance.
The work will cover facilities such as classrooms, toilets, drinking water and electrical infrastructure. The committee has also directed officials to ensure clean drinking water, hygienic toilets and proper sanitation across schools.
Recruitment and Sports Facilities
The committee also reviewed shortages of sanitation workers and security guards in MCD schools. Officials have been asked to expedite a proposal for the recruitment of around 3,000 posts.
The civic body is also examining ways to improve sports facilities. These include developing sports infrastructure through the public-private partnership (PPP) model and organising an MCD Mini League.
Verma said the objective was not simply to increase enrolment figures but to ensure that students in MCD schools receive quality education, basic facilities and opportunities in sports.
