India is home to several structures that make you stop and wonder how they were built. Some were created centuries ago with the technology available at the time, while others represent the scale of modern engineering. From bridges and stepwells to massive monuments, these structures tell the story of India’s engineering journey.
National Engineer’s Day is celebrated every year on September 15 in memory of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most respected engineers. His work in areas such as irrigation, water management and infrastructure made a lasting contribution to the country.
As India celebrates National Engineer’s Day 2026, here are seven engineering marvels that deserve a closer look.
1. Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Mumbai
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is one of the first things that comes to mind when talking about Mumbai’s modern infrastructure. The eight-lane bridge connects Bandra with Worli and has become an important part of the city’s road network.
The bridge uses a combination of concrete viaducts and cable-supported sections. Building such a large structure over the sea came with its own set of challenges, including Mumbai’s coastal conditions and heavy traffic requirements. Officially known as the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, it has now become one of Mumbai’s most recognisable landmarks.
2. Signature Bridge, Delhi
Delhi’s Signature Bridge stands out because of its unusual design and towering pylon. The bridge crosses the Yamuna and connects the Wazirabad area with the inner parts of the city. It was inaugurated in November 2018, with its main pylon rising around 154 metres. That makes it roughly twice as tall as the Qutub Minar.
The bridge is known as India’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge. Its sweeping design has also been compared to the traditional ‘namaste’ gesture, giving it a distinctive place in Delhi’s skyline.
3. Matrimandir, Auroville
The golden spherical Matrimandir is one of the most unusual structures in Auroville, Tamil Nadu. Located in an open area called Peace, it is considered the spiritual centre of Auroville.
The structure is not associated with any particular religion. Its construction began in 1971, when the foundation stone was laid on February 21. The main building was finally completed in 2008.
That means the project took around 36 years to complete, making the Matrimandir not just an architectural attraction but also an example of a long and complex construction effort.
4. Chand Baori, Rajasthan
Modern technology is not the only thing that makes an engineering project impressive. Chand Baori in Rajasthan shows just how advanced traditional Indian water-management techniques were. Located in Abhaneri, the stepwell dates back to around the 8th-9th century. It has about 3,500 steps arranged in a striking symmetrical pattern and goes around 20 metres deep.
The design allowed people to reach the water at different levels depending on how much water was available. Even today, the perfectly arranged steps make Chand Baori one of Rajasthan’s most fascinating architectural sights.
5. Pamban Bridge, Tamil Nadu
The Pamban Bridge has a special place in India’s railway history. The original railway bridge was opened in 1914 and connected Rameswaram Island with mainland Tamil Nadu. Constructing a railway crossing over the sea was a major challenge at the time. The bridge also had a movable section that could open to allow ships to pass through.
The historic bridge has now been replaced by a new Pamban Bridge, which was inaugurated in 2025. The new bridge features a vertical-lift span and is designed to provide better connectivity to Rameswaram. Together, the old and new bridges represent how engineering at the same location has evolved over more than a century.
6. Gol Gumbaz, Karnataka
Gol Gumbaz in Vijayapura is another structure that shows the engineering skills of an earlier era. Built as the mausoleum of Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah, the monument is particularly famous for its huge dome. One of its most interesting features is that the dome stands without conventional supporting pillars. The monument is also known for its Whispering Gallery.
Because of the way sound travels inside the dome, even a quiet whisper can be heard from a considerable distance. This unusual acoustic effect, combined with the enormous dome, makes Gol Gumbaz a remarkable architectural achievement.
7. Statue of Unity, Gujarat
The Statue of Unity is a much more recent addition to India’s list of engineering landmarks. Standing 182 metres tall on Sadhu Bet island in Gujarat, it is the world’s tallest statue. The monument was built in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and was inaugurated on October 31, 2018, on his birth anniversary.
Building a structure of this scale required extensive planning and structural engineering. The monument was designed to remain stable while dealing with factors such as strong winds and other environmental conditions.
From an ancient stepwell in Rajasthan to a modern statue in Gujarat, these structures show how India’s approach to engineering has changed over the years. Yet, each one reflects the same basic idea — finding innovative ways to build, connect, conserve and create something that can stand the test of time.
