The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all universities and colleges across India to share information about the National Renewable Energy Quiz 2026 - RE-Think Beyond Energy with students.

The quiz is being organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, together with the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI). It is part of the outreach activities for the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo (BRESE) 2026, which is scheduled to be held in New Delhi later this year.

The main idea behind this quiz is to connect the youth with important issues like renewable energy, climate change, sustainability and India's clean energy transition. The government wants more students to understand the importance of green energy and how it will help India become a developed country.

Who can participate?

The quiz has been divided into different categories so that more students can join. For the college category, the rules are simple. Only full-time college students who are between 17 to 25 years old can apply. Students have to make a team of two members from the same college and that team will represent their college in the competition.

Apart from college students, there are also categories for school students from Class 9 to 12 and for young professionals up to 30 years of age. But the final for college teams will be held separately.

Important dates

The first step is team registration. Once registration is done, teams will be divided into five zones - North, West, South, East and North East.

The Regional Round will be conducted online on September 22, 23 and 24, 2026. As per the official note, three teams from each region will be selected for the next round of the quiz.

The Grand Final for the college category will be held on November 5, 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, during the BRESE 2026 event.

What will be asked in the quiz?

The theme for this year is “Renewable Energy for a Viksit Bharat”. Questions will be easy and non technical, so that every student can easily understand.

Major topics will include solar energy, rooftop solar, solar parks, wind energy, hydro and bioenergy, green hydrogen, battery storage, floating solar, agrivoltaics and waste-to-energy. Students can also expect questions on government schemes like PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-KUSUM, National Green Hydrogen Mission and India's climate goals.

Prize money

Winners in the college category will get attractive cash prizes. The first prize is Rs 1,00,000, the second prize is Rs 60,000 and the third prize is Rs 40,000. All qualifying teams and finalists will also be given certificates.
