The Commandant is considered as one of the prestigious and respected career rank in Border Security Forces (BSF). The BSF Commandant is senior to that of Assistant Commandant, Deputy Commandant and 2nd in Command. The duty of a Commandant in the BSF is very challenging due to the diversified role that the force plays.
Second-in-Command with 04 years, regular service record and 2IC with 02 years’ service as 2IC in Duty Bn and medical category SHAPE-I are considered for promotion to the rank of Commandant.

How to Join BSF as Assistant Commandant and where you can apply?
Candidates can join the BSF as Sub-Inspector or apply for the Assistant Commandant (AC) post, 50% posts of Assistant Commandant are filled through Direct Recruitment (including 10% from SSCO) and balance 50% by promotion from Inspector to AC.
The Union Public Service Commission solely is responsible for issuing guidelines for selection and conducting entrance examination. So, to become a Commandant in BSF, first a candidate should either qualify the Assistant Commandant exam or he should get promotions from the Inspector post.
Candidates should possess Degree from a recognised University/Institution or equivalent, Possession of NCC B or C Certificate, or outstanding achievements in sports or athletics will be an added qualification.
19 to 25 years.In the case of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Other Backward Class candidates in accordance with the instructions/orders of Govt from time to time.
The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of duties.
The minimum acceptable height for Male is 165 Centimetre and for a female is 157 Centimetre.
The minimum acceptable chest for Male is 81-86 Centimetre.
Minimum weight for Male is 50 Kg and for a female is 46 Kg.
For Male, the distance vision (corrected) should be 6/6 or, 6/9. For Female, the distance vision (corrected) should be 6/12 in or, 6/9.
Candidates must possess high colour vision.
Apart from all above physical parameters, candidates shouldn’t have Knock-Knee, Flat Foot and Squint in Eyes. Also, the candidates shouldn’t have any physical disability and should be mentally as well as physically fit.
There is a three-step selection process to become Assistant Commandant in BSF. Written test will be conducted at the first level. The written examination to be conducted by Union Public Service Commission will comprise two papers. Paper I & Paper II.A candidate getting success in written test will need to appear for the physical fitness test. In the end, a personal interview will be conducted. After qualifying all these three steps a candidate gets the opportunity to become Assistant Commandant.
Salary Structure and Other Allowances:
The salary structure of a Commandant is set according to the pay band.The pay band of every employee is structured as per the designation and Grade they work in.As Commandant is considered as a higher-level officer and thus the pay scale is in between Rs. 37400 – Rs. 67000. The grade pay ranges from Rs. 8,700 to Rs. 10,000. However, there will be a massive increase in this group under the 7th CPC. The new pay band 4 will be Rs. 1,12,200 – 2,00,100. And the grade pay will range from Rs. 26,100 to Rs. 30,000.
The other allowances that a Commandant enjoys are Transport Allowances and House Rent Allowance (if residing quarters is not provided), Dearness Allowance. All the allowances depend on certain terms and conditions and may vary from region to region or from situation to situation.
