The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Defence Service Exam (CDSE) twice a year to select officers to tri-services – Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. After clearing the Written Exam and the Intelligence and Personality Test by the Services Selection Board (SSB) successfully, the selected candidates undergo rigorous training in respective Academies. Upon the successful completion of training, the candidates are granted Permanent Commission or Short Service Commission based on one’s place in the merit list and the choice of commission.
IMA, Dehradun
At the Indian Military Academy Army (IMA), Cadets, known as Gentlemen Cadets, undergo strenuous military training for a period of 18 months. The training is aimed at turning out officers capable of leading infantry subunits. On successful completion of training Gentlemen Cadets are granted Permanent Commission in the rank of Lieutenant subject to being medically fit.
Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala
Candidates selected for training at the Indian Naval Academy will be appointed as Cadets under the Graduate Cadet Special Entry Scheme (GSES) Course. The candidates shall remain under probation till completion of initial training. After the successful completion of the below given training the Cadets are granted Permanent Commission into the Indian Navy.

The cadets shall be commissioned in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant after successful completion of approximately 18 months of training.
Air Force Academy, Hyderabad
Primarily, it is a Pre-Flying Training Course. Candidates recommended by the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs) and found medically fit by appropriate medical establishment are detailed for training strictly on the basis of merit and availability of vacancies. The merit list for Direct Entry Flying (Pilot) candidates is based on the combined marks secured by the candidates in the tests conducted by the UPSC and at the Air Force Selection Boards. The training in the academy is approximately for 74 weeks. After successful completion of training, the candidates are granted permanent commission in the rank of Flying Officer and will be entitled to the pay and allowances of the rank.
The aspirants should know the fact that, the left-over candidates of IMA/Indian Naval Academy/Air Force Academy courses i.e. those who have been recommended by the UPSC for grant of Permanent Commission on the basis of the final results of the CDS Examination, but who could not be inducted on these courses for any reason whatsoever may be considered for grant of Short Services Commission (SSC). The training for the candidates selected for the SSC is held in the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. The training in the OTA is of non-technical (NT) in nature and is available for both Men and Women.
