UPSC IAS Main Exam : GS Paper II : The unholy nexus of Politician, Mafia and Bureaucrat

Oct 9, 2015 17:09 IST

The nexus of the politicians, mafia and bureaucrats is eroding the credibility of public institutions and nation at large. This unholy triad over time has deepened its root in the system with the sole purpose of personal aggrandizement. The mainstreaming of hardcore criminals and mafias into electoral politics has undermined the integrity of public office and functionality.

One of the major reasons of this nexus is criminalization of politics and politicization of criminals which lead to play of money and muscle power in the elections. Tainted candidates of self serving nature get elected who hardly cares for public service.

These politicians use unscrupulous ways for personal aggrandizement thereby jeopardizing the integrity of the office they occupy. Bureaucrats with unethical behavior and rent seeking tendency collaborate with their political masters for corruption and nepotism. The menace of black money emanates and flourishes from this nexus.

Public feels cheated and tend to lose its confidence on the whole system because of its apathetic behavior towards its issues. The two organs of the government comprising of permanent executive (bureaucrats) and temporary executive (politicians) need to function in a collaborative manner for the public purpose but if need arises they can check each other’s activity.

There is a growing clamour to break this syndicate right from the time of election. If timely corrective measure is not taken against this evil, it can go out of bound and no further action can restore the loss confidence of public. State funding of elections, debarring criminals from entering politics and checking the flow of black money can address this issue. Honest and upright politicians and bureaucrats should take the call to check this menace.
