Lady Shri Ram College for Women under Delhi University has tightened security across its campus. The step comes after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir. The park lies around 2 km from the college and the incident has raised serious safety concerns among students. Delhi Police has responded by strengthening patrolling and auditing street lighting around the area. Personnel posted at a police booth near the college have also been briefed. The college administration and the students’ union along with senior police officials sat with students to understand their concerns and explain the steps being taken in coordination with the college. New Safety Measures Around The Campus
A WhatsApp group now connects members of the LSR administration and the students’ union and senior police personnel. It aims to ensure swift action and smooth reporting of incidents and concerns. Officers deployed at the Pink Booth near the college have been instructed to ensure effective patrolling and remove encroachments. They must also take appropriate action against unwanted elements in the region as and when required. Repair work on street lights has commenced after a security review by the police on Wednesday. Speed breakers were constructed in the back lane of LSR around 10 days ago. The capital city police have further increased patrolling in the college vicinity. These steps aim to make the approach roads safer for students.
University Support And Student Voices
A meeting with students was held by Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar and DCP Vineet Kumar along with the SHO. University Proctor Manoj Kumar Singh and his team also visited the college to express support from the university. The alleged incident has left the LSR community deeply worried about safety in the area. Several students held a solidarity march on Wednesday to seek better infrastructure. They said these concerns were prevalent even before the incident. The college and the police say the coordinated measures will continue so that students feel secure on and around the campus.
