NEET UG 2026: National Medical Commission Adds 13,636 MBBS Seats, Total Intake Reaches 1.40 Lakh

NEET UG 2026 Counselling: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, adding 13,636 undergraduate medical seats across government and private medical colleges. With the latest revision, the total number of approved MBBS seats in the country has increased to 1,40,664.

The updated seat matrix, issued by the NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), covers 839 medical colleges across India. Seats offered by Institutes of National Importance (INIs) are not included in the figures.

Government, Private Colleges Account for 1.40 Lakh Seats

Of the total 1,40,664 MBBS seats, 64,121 seats are available in government medical colleges, while 76,543 seats are in private institutions.

The NMC has directed medical colleges to admit students only against the seats approved and notified in the revised matrix for the 2026-27 academic session.

41 New Medical Colleges Add 3,850 Seats

According to the revised matrix, 41 newly established medical colleges have contributed 3,850 additional MBBS seats.

This includes:

- 13 government medical colleges: 850 seats
- 28 private medical colleges: 3,000 seats

The remaining increase has come from higher student intake approved for existing medical colleges following regulatory and appeal processes.

The NMC has also stated that the seat matrix could be revised further depending on decisions by appeal committees or other competent authorities.

Karnataka Records Highest Increase

Several states have received a substantial increase in their MBBS intake. Karnataka has recorded the highest addition with 1,650 seats, followed by Bihar with 1,290 and Tamil Nadu with 1,250 seats.

With the latest revision, West Bengal's total MBBS intake has reached 7,400 seats, while Telangana's total stands at 10,500. Maharashtra now has 13,399 approved MBBS seats.

NMC Issues Admission Direction to Medical Colleges

The NMC has instructed medical colleges to conduct admissions strictly against the seats approved under the revised MBBS seat matrix.

The regulator has also clarified that the current matrix may undergo further changes based on decisions taken by competent authorities.

For NEET UG 2026 candidates participating in counselling, the revised seat matrix is an important reference for checking the latest approved seat availability across medical colleges.

The revised seat matrix comes as the NEET UG 2026 counselling process moves forward. According to the latest counselling schedule mentioned in the report, MCC Round 3 registration is underway, with seat allotment scheduled for September 30, 2026.
