India has formally standardised the names of 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh on the official Survey of India map, amid persisting differences with China over the disputed boundary. The Ministry of Home Affairs said the exercise was carried out in consultation with the Union Territory administration and is intended to ensure accurate recognition of locations and improve public awareness.

Which are the 28 Ladakh Locations and Features?

The list covers peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes, water bodies and land areas. Among the peaks are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.

The list also includes Karun Pir, Drak Karpo and Jolmori mountains; Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass; Parpik and Skamri glaciers; and Shkorga Valley. Other identified features include Gogra, Hot Spring, Dehra Compass, Brangsa, Kuksel, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa. Guru Rinpoche is identified as a lake, while Yangpa is listed as a river.

Why are Gogra and Hot Spring significant for India-China ties?

Gogra and Hot Spring are among locations associated with India-China military friction in eastern Ladakh. Tensions escalated sharply in 2020 following a violent confrontation between Indian and Chinese forces in the Pangong Lake area.

Their inclusion on the official Survey of India map gives standardised names to locations with strategic significance along the Line of Actual Control. The LAC is not a mutually demarcated international boundary, and differing perceptions of its alignment have contributed to military tensions.

Some newly identified features are in areas India claims as part of Ladakh but which are under Chinese control. Dehra Compass, for example, has been identified in the disputed Aksai Chin region. The mapping records India’s geographical nomenclature for areas that remain part of the territorial dispute.

Aksai Chin has been under Chinese control since the 1950s and is claimed by India. The region is strategically important because the Chinese G219 highway passes through it, linking Xinjiang with Tibet.

Why does India’s Mapping Move Matters?

The government’s stated purpose is administrative and cartographic: standardising names on the Survey of India map and facilitating accurate identification. The timing gives the exercise wider significance amid India-China territorial disagreements.

The move also follows a similar exercise in Arunachal Pradesh, where the Centre standardised 27 geographical features in August 2026. China has separately announced Chinese names for locations in areas claimed by India, a practice India has rejected.

The Ladakh update does not alter physical control of disputed territory or settle the boundary question. Instead, it establishes the names India will use in official cartographic records.
