New Delhi: On 3rd October 2020, the Main Road of Paschim Vihar's A-3 Block, leading to Balaji Action Hospital, was named after Vir Chakra Awardee Capt. Kumud Kumar. Following the official naming ceremony, the road will now be known as "Vir Chakra Captain Kumud Kumar Marg".
The ceremony for naming the road was graced by Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, who was joined by the Mayor of NDMC (North Delhi Municipal Corporation), Mr Jai Prakash, along with Mr Vineet Vohra - Chairman of Medical Assistance and Public Health Committee of NDMC. Leader of the House, NDMC, Mr Yogesh Verma, who was also invited to be part of the event as a special guest. The ceremony for naming the road after Capt. Kumud Kumar was held at 10 in the morning.
Road Naming to Infuse Patriotic Fervour Among People
Naming a prominent road after Capt. Kumud Kumar- a Hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak War, is a glowing tribute to the Vir Chakra Awardee. This decision taken by the Govt. of India is not only intended to immortalize the memory of a war hero but also to instil patriotic fervour in the future generations of the country.
Capt. Kumud is a source of inspiration for not only the residents of Paschim Vihar but for the youth of the entire country. This road will be an eternal reminder for the residents of New Delhi about the valour and bravery of the Indian Armed Forces. It will also be symbolic of the high price that brave warriors like Capt. Kumud pay on the battlefield, behalf of all of us, to keep the tricolour flying high.
Gallantry Saga of Capt. Kumud Kumar
Capt. Kumud Kumar completed his officer's training from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He opted for the Infantry and was commissioned into the 2nd battalion of the Rajput Regiment. In 1971, when the war broke out between India and Pakistan, Capt. Kumud's regiment was asked to move to the battlefield in erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

During the war, Capt. Kumud Kumar was leading a platoon of a Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, which was ordered to clear a road block in the Eastern Sector. During the advance, the enemy brought down heavy fire from medium machine gun and light machine guns. Capt. Kumud Kumar crawled up to the medium machine gun bunker and silenced it by lobbing a grenade on it. This action enabled the platoon to capture the position and clear the road block. In this action, Capt Kumud Kumar displayed gallantry, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order. For this heroic act of daredevilry, Capt. Kumud was later awarded the Vir Chakra.
