Delhi University: A "Campus Justice March" was held on Saturday at the North Campus of Delhi University by students of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) to pressurise for better safety measures and institutional protection for women students. The march began from the Arts faculty premises, with many protesters marching through the university roads holding banners with slogans like "Why are women not safe in India?" and "Nirbhayas are still taking place in India." The march was carried out to express concerns about gender-based violence and public safety in the national capital. The protesters raised slogans to criticise the ineffectiveness of repeated public reassurances as these crimes continue unabated.
While addressing the protesters, members of the SFI pointed out that providing safety in the institutions demands constant institutional accountability, proper infrastructure including well-lit streets within the institution and stringent preventive measures instead of reactive measures in case of any disaster. Seeking changes in the system, the student community demanded institutional authorities and law-enforcing agencies to take responsibility to provide safety to women.
SFI demands safer campuses and public spaces
They said that women should be allowed to engage in academic activities without compromising on the mannerisms due to security concerns. They said there should be an enhanced institutional responsibility on providing safe space to the students.
The protest occurs at a time when efforts are being made by the students of Delhi University regarding the issue of women safety. Students associated with the SFI have organized marches in the past to demand for safer space for women.
The recent march at North Campus is a further step taken by the students demanding for better safety mechanisms. The protestors argued that women’s safety will always remain an issue that needs to be dealt with.
The protestors demanded the authorities to take continuous actions in order to ensure that the women are provided a safe space to study and move freely without any restrictions due to security concerns.
