NCERT has added a new chapter to the Class 9 Social Science syllabus. The chapter is called Resistance and Resilience (1000 CE–1700 CE). It is part of the updated Understanding Society, India and Beyond textbook. The chapter explains how regional kingdoms and communities in India responded to invasions and changing political conditions between the 11th and 17th centuries. What the New Chapter Covers
The chapter looks at political, military and cultural developments across India during this period. A section called Safeguarding Sovereignty explains how regional powers protected their land. It talks about warfare, alliances, diplomacy and confederacies.The chapter also discusses Arab and Turkish invasions. It covers the resistance offered by kingdoms in the Deccan, Malwa, Kashmir and Rajasthan. One key figure in the chapter is Queen Naiki Devi of the Chalukya kingdom. She is linked to the defeat of Muhammad Ghuri at the Battle of Kasahrada near Mount Abu in 1178.The chapter also covers art and architecture. It includes languages and literature as well. Students will read about the Bhakti tradition. It also explains forts and fortifications. The growth of the Indian economy and state is another key theme.NCERT has listed this as a nine-hour unit in the revised syllabus. The learning outcomes focus on India’s political, cultural and civilisational development up to the 18th century. The goal is to help students understand how different regions shaped India’s history.
Changes Across Class 9 and Class 10
The new chapter is part of a bigger restructuring by NCERT. The board has changed the order of themes across secondary-stage Social Science books. India and the World Part 1 was earlier planned for Class 9. It has now been moved to Class 10. Students will study it with related themes that have similar learning outcomes.The Class 9 Part 2 textbook also gets a new chapter on Governance and Public Policy. This replaces the earlier planned chapter on Authority.NCERT has said these changes will make the curriculum more coherent and age-appropriate. The aim is to keep the content engaging. It also ensures students learn each topic at the right stage of school.
