WhatsApp has rolled out a new set of parental controls for teenagers, giving parents more say over how their children use certain features on the messaging platform. The new tools are optional and are designed to help parents and teenagers set boundaries together while keeping personal conversations private.

The new controls allow parents to manage selected privacy settings, monitor certain group activity and decide how teenagers can use Channels, Status and Meta AI. WhatsApp said the features will be introduced gradually.

WhatsApp Parental Controls: What Can Parents Manage?

Under the new WhatsApp parental controls, parents can decide who can see their teenager’s profile picture and who can add them to WhatsApp groups.

If a teenager wants to make these settings less restrictive, parental approval will be required through a PIN set by the parent. This gives parents control over selected privacy settings without allowing them to access the teen’s conversations.

Parents can also receive notifications when their teenager joins or leaves a WhatsApp group. They may also be alerted when a group the teenager is part of grows significantly in size.

New WhatsApp Controls For Status And Channels

The update also adds controls for WhatsApp Status and Channels. Parents can decide which Status updates their teenager can view and who can see the teenager’s own Status updates.

They can also set boundaries around how their teen uses WhatsApp Channels, giving families more control over the content and interactions available to younger users.

Parents Can Limit Meta AI For Teenagers

WhatsApp has also added controls for the Meta AI experience. Parents can choose between the standard 13+ setting and a stricter Limited Content option.

The company said the controls are intended to give families flexibility rather than completely restrict teenagers from using the platform.

WhatsApp Chats Will Remain Private

One of the key points of the update is that parental controls do not give parents access to their teenager’s private messages or calls. WhatsApp said personal chats and calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, even when parental controls are enabled.

The new tools can also be changed or switched off, allowing families to adjust the settings as teenagers grow older.
