The Board of Secondary Education Manipur was established by an Act of Manipur legislative assembly in 1972. At present there are 786 high and higher secondary schools. The schools in the state are managed by the government or private bodies. Besides the conduction of examination, the board also develops syllabus and curriculum, preparation, printing and distribution of text books from class 1 to 10th. The board also set ups a common question paper and checks the answer sheets collectively.
In 2013, a total of 24267 candidates passed the examination with the 72 pass percentage. A total of 33771 enrolled for the HSLC examination 2013, but 33579 appeared for these examinations. In the examination, 10,668 candidates passed the first division, 12452 in the second division and 1147 in the third division.
