NIOS, known as National institute of open learning, is an autonomous organization that is established by ministry of human resource development in the year 1989, and this move was based on the national education policy. The main objective of establishing this is to set up educational standard in distance education and open schemes in India. This setting up of open school learning system has set up solidified its helping hand to the students, who are undergoing education through home schooling, as it helps to prove their credibility via its accredited, quality. The detailed portrayal of its various education schemes are listed as follows;
Secondary course
This course is equal to the 10th standard in the quality of education it provides. The students would be allowed to choose the subjects but studying of basic five subjects is compulsory.
Senior secondary course
This course is equal toNIOS 12th standard course as it allows the students who have passed 10th class examination from any recognized board to pursue or continue education to the senior secondary level.
Open basic education
OBE provides preliminary education which is equal to the formal school educational system and this course offers education at basically three levels i.e. level A, is equal to class 3, Level B is equal to class 5 and the last level i.e. equivalent to class 8
Apart from these courses there are vocational courses and life enrichment courses. Under vocational course, certificate or diploma courses are offered to the candidates and these courses itself comprise of different levels such as certificate in open schooling, advance certificate in open schooling, and diploma in open schooling. Any person can continue with this program and the only eligibility criteria required for this is that of a graduation degree. This scheme is covered in more than 83 courses which include agriculture, engineering and technology, home science and management.
Adding on, there are also life enrichment courses. These courses comprise of life enhancement programs such as women empowerment, yoga, Hindustani music, and the best part is that there are no examinations conducted for such programs.
The examinations are held twice in year in the months of April-May and October-November, as per the dates fixed by NIOS. In 2012 there were approximately 1 lakh 53 thousand appeared for the examination of 10th and on the other hand registration of 1 lakh 72 thousand was done for class 12th.
As far as the pass percentage of class 10th examinations was concerned, the girls outshined the boys with 45.21 per cent of males having passed the examination, while the pass percentage of females was 44.19. As compared to class statistics of class 12th, the pass percentage of girls were 39.10 to that 37.99 of boys.
