Tripura board of secondary education was established in 1973 under the act known as Tripura board of secondary education, passed by the Tripura legislative assembly. The education board started functioning from 1st of January 1976, and before this all the high and higher secondary schools were affiliated under the west Bengal board of secondary education. Mainly because of this, students had to appear for the examinations conducted by the West Bengal board of secondary education. It was during the year 1976; Tripura educational board had conducted its first public examinations. The board of education takes care of the examination question paper, syllabus, and study material to be provided for the students. Tripura schools are managed and run by the state government as well as the private institutions. The medium of language is mainly in English and Bengali and other tribal languages are also used.

As far as the literacy rate is concerned, there has been a tremendous improvement in the literacy rate. According to the 2011 census of India, the overall literacy rate of Tripura was 87.75 per cent.As per the information provided by the Tripura board higher secondary, of the previous year i.e. 2013, it has been found out that three jail inmates and six blind students passed the higher secondary (+2) examination in Tripura. The Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) declared the high school leaving exam results in the month of May which clearly depicted a 4.52 per cent rise in the number of successful candidates.
Adding on, The TBSE for the first time also conducted Madrassa (Arts and Theology) examinations majority of students passed the examination. The result for these examinations was declared within a period of 65 days. Approximately 23,079 candidates appeared for the examination in the 2013 higher secondary (+2) examinations and 79.82 per cent were successful. As in the last two years, girls (81 per cent of who passed) performed better than boys. Therefore as per the statistics, the girls outshined the boys. This clearly means that the number of females receiving education is suitable and the best part is that they are excelling in their performance.
