Every year on March 18th, India commemorates Ordnance Factories Day, a day to recognise the significant contributions of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) to the nation's defence needs. Ordnance Factories Day is an occasion to celebrate the technological advancements and innovative spirit of the OFB. Parades, exhibitions, and award ceremonies are held across various factories, showcasing the latest developments in weaponry and production processes.
What is the History of Ordnance Factories Day?
India's Ordnance Factories trace their roots back to British colonial times. To meet the needs of their army, the British East India Company established the Board of Ordnance in Kolkata in 1775. Soon after, they built a gunpowder factory in Ishapore (1787) and a gun carriage factory in Cossipore (now known as the Gun and Shell Factory) in 1787.
Following India's independence in 1947, these factories came under the Indian government's control. Ordnance Factories Day, celebrated on March 18th each year, commemorates the founding of the Cossipore factory, marking the birthplace of India's ordnance production.
What is the Significance of Ordnance Factories Day?
Ordnance Factories Day holds several significant purposes:

- Showcases IOF Capabilities: The day serves as a platform for the Indian Ordnance Factories (IOFs) to exhibit their research, development, and manufacturing prowess in supplying the Indian Armed Forces. This includes showcasing a wide range of weaponry and ammunition.
- Honours IOF Employees: It's a day to recognise and appreciate the dedication and hard work of the IOF workforce who play a vital role in national security by equipping the Indian military.
