The temperature in Europe is soaring high beyond the tolerance level of the locals of Europe. The temperatures have easily crossed 40 degree Celsius, the hottest June day was on 26th June, 2026 with 40.8 degrees in Doksany. This broke the record which was made in the year 1976.
The condition has turned life threatening with increasing death tolls day by day. Not just from heatwaves, citizens are losing their lives trying to protect themselves from the heat.
For example, In France a bunch of teenagers lost their lives while jumping into a river to find respite in the water, only to end up drowning instead. This shows the extent of extreme temperature difficulties being faced by the people in Europe this summer.
Melting Roads and Travel Disruption
In France, roads are melting due to the extreme heat temperatures, blocking the commute of people during work hours. This is in turn creating traffic and long lines in hot temperatures, further ruining the health of the citizens.
In Germany public transport via subways was also reduced in number. People were advised to only travel in cases of absolute need and to stay indoors instead of going outside for other plans because it is creating a pressure on the electricity supply, which can lead to incidence of fire outbreak due to excessive heating.
Critical Condition in Hospitals and Healthcare
Those who are already suffering from illness are finding no respite in hospitals, since the temperatures are crossing 35 degrees. In Dormagen, a nursing home had to be evacuated overnight because the temperature inside the hospital was not suitable for the patients admitted.
Meanwhile, Paris is seeing a surge in patients being admitted in hospitals due to heatstroke and health problems caused by the unbearable heat. More than 3000 patients were seen getting admitted on Saturday alone. This is putting pressure on the healthcare workers as well, who have to cater to a higher number of patients, there is also lack of availability of beds in the hospitals due to rising illness caused by heatstroke.
Main Reason Behind Europe’s Worsening Condition
Europe is the fastest heating continent in the world right now, at a speed much more alarming than other continents. Europe also does not have advanced air conditioning systems unlike countries in Asia like South Korea or Japan.
Most of the buildings and infrastructure are extremely old and cannot have air conditioning integrated into their interior. This forces the citizens to survive 35 degrees without any provision of air conditioning.
Some cities require the common people to ask for permission before installing any such appliance due to the critical condition of the buildings. To survive the extreme cold conditions in winter season, the apartments in Europe are made of insulated materials to trap heat, creating a tough situation during summers.
Compared to tropical countries like India, Europe does not have the infrastructure and provisions to deal with such high temperatures yet. India not only has access to air conditioning in almost all public spaces like malls, workplaces and private hospitals, it also has provisions by the government to offer drinking water, shade to the vendors and spray of water around the city by the Municipal Cooperation at regular intervals.
