World Environment Day 2026 is celebrated on Friday, 5 June 2026. This year, Azerbaijan is the hosting country for the global commemoration of World Environment Day in Baku

This theme imposes on us that nature is our greatest educator. It's time to take lessons from nature and take bold action to combat climate change.

Here are some easy-to-understand and important facts about World Environment Day 2026:

1. The United Nations decided in 1972 to celebrate this day in a large conference, the Stockholm Conference. Over 113 countries met in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss the protection of the environment. It was the first time that so many countries spoke on environmental matters in a joint meeting.

2. World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time on 5 June 1973. The theme of that year was ‘Only One Earth'. A theme is chosen every year on 5 June, and a country is selected to host the celebration.

3. Today, more than 150 countries celebrate World Environment Day. People from more than 150 countries participate in World Environment Day. This is also true for India! Schools, colleges, NGOs, companies and governments are involved and conduct awareness programmes.

4. World Environment Day is the biggest platform to raise awareness about the environment. Some 4 million people each year take part in the events, planting trees, cleaning rivers and imparting messages on saving the planet.

5. It is led by UNEP. The day is organised and led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP is a special organisation of the United Nations, established for the care of our planet.

6. This year, in 2026, Azerbaijan will host the global celebration in Baku for World Environment Day. Azerbaijan was also the host of the UN Climate Conference (COP29) in 2024. The country has a rich natural diversity and is using this opportunity to push for strong climate action around the world.

7. This year, in 2026, the main focus is on climate action. Scientists say that the years 2015 to 2025 were the hottest 11 years ever recorded in history. Now the world has reached a 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature, which is highly risky for every living being.

8. The 2026 theme is that nature is at the centre; it is not optional. This means that we cannot neglect nature. The answer to climate change is forests, rivers, animals and plants. If we take care of nature, we take care of ourselves!

10. India is one of the most active participants in World Environment Day. Indians have a significant contribution to this day, from planting crores of trees to organising cleanliness drives along rivers such as the Ganga and Yamuna.

But, with World Environment Day, 2026, India is taking many important steps toward the cleanliness of the environment, like planting trees, saving water, and using less electricity, and has started many projects to save the environment.
